The purpose of the School-to-University Program is to encourage and promote increased college attendance amongst minority youth through early preparation. The Historically Black Colleges and Universities Tour is one avenue by which this goal is accomplished.
The objectives of the tour are:
- To provide area high school students with an opportunity to experience the historical significance of black colleges and universities;
- To encourage attendance at one of these historically black colleges and/or universities;
- To reinforce the principles that preparation and hard work today paves the way for future success;
- To develop long-term mutually beneficial working relationships with identified colleges and/or universities through admissions, career placement, financial aid and various departments;
- To enable youth participants to meet with various department heads in their area of interest;
- To enable students to experience a smooth transition into college life and to promote and to understand the importance of education; and
- To promote the pursuit of excellence.
Applicants must submit the following:
- A completed application
- Two letters of recommendations from non-family members (e.g.: teacher, counselor, principal, minister, etc.)
- A 300-word essay on The Value of Higher Education
- An official transcript with proof of a minimum C grade point average
- HBCU Tour fee in the amount of $175. Once student has received a phone call of acceptance, payment of all tour fees is due in full.
Selected applicants are required to attend a pre-tour workshop and parent/student orientation session. All application materials are due to the PUSH Excel office of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition (see mailing address above) no later than Monday, February 25, 2008.
